Exe Trail History

In 2004 Devon County council held discussions with interested parties, land owners and environmental agencies regarding the creation of a stunning cycle route that would follow the coast and river bank from Dawlish to Exmouth.  The responses to these discussions were reported to the County Council Executive and approved within the 2006 - 2011 transport plan.

Since then the council have achieved great things and we now have a trail that encompasses most of the planned route.

The initial parts of the route to open were from Bridge Road to Turf Lock with the sections from Lympstone to Exmouth following and then the sections from Exton to Lympstone. All of these sections were newly created or involved a large amount of work to ensure people could cycle without difficulty.

With all planning permission now approved for the final sections from Powderham to Turf Lock and the section over the River Clyst at Topsham, the trail should be complete within the next 2 years.

More information regarding the trail can be obtained from Exeter CIty Councils web page. Click Here

The route from Exeter to Exmouth now makes up part of the Le Tour De Manche a new cycle route that takes in part of the French and English Coastlines and covers a distance of 750 miles. To view the Okehampton to Axminster section please click here

Although an Exe Trail map is available to download from the Exeter City Council website, you may want more detailed information and we would recommend visiting Sustrans without whose help these cycle trails would probably not exist.  Please click here to visit their site and obtain up to date maps covering this and many other trails within Devon.

The Exe Trail makes up a part of National Cycle Route 2 and when complete this route will stretch all the way from Dover in Kent to St Austell in Cornwall. A large proportion of the route is already complete so take your time and enjoy some of the most stunning scenery your ever likely to see. Further information relating to National Cycle Route 2 can be obtained at the following link

The Route

The route featured below uses Googles Cycling directions but is a reasonably accurate representation of what the finished route will be. As with the 3 tabs we have covered the sections form Dawlish to Bridge Road in Exeter and also the section from St Davids Railway Station to Bridge Road.
